Building Character

As Christians, we are called to walk with God and to obey His commandments. But, we live in a world that present us with countless temptations to wander far from God's path. These temptations have the potential to destroy us, in part, because they cause us to be dishonest with ourselves and with others.

Dishonesty is a habit. Once we start bending the truth, we're likely to keep bending it. A far better strategy, of course, is to acquire the habit of being completely honest with God, with other people, and with ourselves.

Honesty, like its counterpart, is also a habit, a habit that pays powerful dividends for those who place character above convenience. So, for the next few days, if you will, I challenge you to make this simple promise to yourself and keep it: when you're tempted to bend the truth, even slightly - or to break it - ask yourself this question: "What does God want me to do?" Then listen carefully to your conscience. When you do, your actions will be honorable, and your character will take care of itself.

Take time to think about your own character, both your strong points and your weaknesses. Then be mindful of three aspects of your character - longstanding habits or troublesome behaviors - that you would like to modify during the next few days. Finally, ask God to be your partner as you take steps to improve yourself and your life.

Open your heart to God and embrace the transformation.

Blessings!
