There were several times in our earlier years of marriage when my wife would ask me to love her a certain way (nothing extreme or out of the ordinary), and I would reply, "I don't think I have the capacity to be who you need me to be".
The reality was, her requests were only unrealistic because I was attempting to love her with a "selfish heart". Your mate's requests will always seem unrealistic when you are selfish and prideful.
The moment I'd decided to stop trying to preserve my own ego, and began working on serving her needs apart from my pride, things began to change.
Most couples don't need a divorce from their marriage; they need a funeral for their pride.
You have my permission to think differently.
